Arizona National Guard soldier to get medal
PHOENIX (AP) — A member of the Arizona Army National Guard is being decorated for what Guard officials say was life-saving aid that to another Guard soldier severely injured in an auto accident.
Pfc. Edwin Carter used his military training to help stabilize the head and neck of Spc. Rashaad Gregory until paramedics arrived.
The July 28 accident had caused Gregory's skull to tear away from his spine. That type of injury suffered by typically results in injury or paralysis.
However, the Guard says Gregory has had successful surgeries and that he walked out of a hospital using a walker for assistance in November.
Carter is to receive the Army Commendation Medal during a ceremony Sunday at an armory in Phoenix.
He is assigned to the 222nd Transportation Co. based in Florence.
