TUCSON (KGUN 9)-- Tucson Border Patrol is preparing for a major event this weekend. It's the 2nd annual 5k race to remember fallen agents. It's being organized by Border Patrol wives, with the proceeds going to the Tucson Sector families in need ,through the Border Patrol Foundation.
Holly Schadt and Kelley Meshirer sat down with KGUN 9 to talk about the upcoming event.
"It's so special to us because we are Border Patrol wives and we understand the sacrifices our husbands give everyday when they go into work. It's also beyond that, it's a great experience to be a part of something bigger than ourselves that gives back to a group of people in need," said Meshirer.
In a unique twist... it's a run, walk or ruck, where you ca carry a backpack weighing about 38 pounds...to simulate what the agents have as their gear.
"We have been asking people to put food like beans and rice in their backpacks, and we're donating to the food bank," said Schadt.
The 5K is this Saturday, April 12th. It begins at 8 am at Sam Lena Park. If you don't want to run the route, it's a family friendly event with lots of vendors including a jumping castle and face painting. Last year more than 660 people registered.
