TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Neighbors say it sounded like a machine gun went off. When they looked down the road, they saw several cops and a helicopter circling above.
Police were responding to a 9-1-1 call. The woman on the line said she was going to commit suicide, and that people were in the house with her.
When police arrived, the 24-year-old woman was in the front yard next to a man. Her handgun was pointed at the officers.
Police say she refused to lower the gun -- that's when they fired, hitting the woman and also striking the man next to her.
They were both taken to the hospital, where the woman died.
Nine On Your Side spoke to the family of the man standing next to her. The two had a domestic relationship. He took a bullet in the arm, but it went clear through and fractured a rib. The family and police say he's going to be ok.
