Local boy gets chance to be "pilot for a day"

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - During a four year battle with cancer, there were surely times Abrium Reyes wished he could just be a normal kid. But not on Thursday.

"This day to him was like the first day of school, he couldn't even sleep last night," said Reyes' mother.

The 10-year-old suited up and stepped in as "pilot for a day" at Davis Monthan Air Force Base.

"I feel very lucky to be here," said Abrium.

He proudly took his honorary pilot oath, tested the pilot gear, strapped on survival gear and peeked through night-vision goggles.

"Those goggles, they're awesome," he said. "In a dark place you can see, it looks like broad daylight."

A firsthand look at a very special job. He got a look inside the planes, the equipment, the navigation and the controls.

But Reyes says he is 50-50 about becoming a pilot when he grows up.

"I think they're crazy," he said.

His mom hopes he seriously considers it.
