Bomb Squad closes Tucson neighborhood

By Craig Smith. CREATED Apr 25, 2013

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A suspicious package evacuated a school, shutdown a neighborhood and brought out the bomb squad in Tucson Thursday.

About 1:30 someone spotted a suspicious package near HOPE Inc, a behavioral health facility, and AmeriSchools Academy a K-8 charter school.

Police shut streets and called in the bomb squad. They evacuated HOPE, and AmeriSchools.  About 210 kids cleared out of the school and met up with parents in a nearby park.

Parent Tyease Epps says, "Whenever you hear anything about a suspicious backpack or package, the first thing that goes through your mind is definitely something negative---So very scary when that's involved.

Melissa Guitard is another parent who says, "With all these crazy people in this world and you know I just was hoping that something wasn't tragically happening at the school."

Once police were able to get a good look at the package, they determined it was a bag of old clothes.  Tucson Police say they would have mounted a strong response to the suspicious package even without public nerves rubbed raw by the Boston Marathon bombings.

Police say if they find someone planted the package as a hoax designed to frighten the public, that person will be in for felony prosecution---and a bill for the police response.
