TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – Tucson Sector Border Patrol tells KGUN 9 that three people trapped in the trunk of a burning vehicle were rescued by agents over the weekend.
On Saturday night, a Casa Grande Station agent working near Federal Route 15 observed a suspicious vehicle traveling northbound. As the agent initiated a vehicle stop, the sedan suddenly stopped and burst into flames.
Four individuals jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to evade arrest; two were quickly apprehended. A third person returned to the scene and told agents that there were people locked in the trunk.
Agents managed to open the trunk and rescue one adult and two juveniles who were trapped inside.
The juveniles were suffering from symptoms of smoke inhalation and were subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. A short time later, agents apprehended the fourth person who had attempted to escape.
All seven individuals were determined to be Mexican nationals illegally present in the U.S. The driver of the vehicle faces possible prosecution.
