Shotgun giveaway gains momentum despite criticism

TUCSON(KGUN9-TV) - The guy who wants to give away shotguns has gone global. One-time Tucson mayoral candidate, Shaun McClusky is gaining momentum in his pursuit to pass out shotguns for free. McClusky is in USA Today, MSN, Wall Street Journal -- you name it.

All of that publicity is because the program, aimed at arming people in what McClusky calls Tucson's high-crime neighborhoods, is a go, despite heavy criticism.

Kyle Coplen is actually the one who started The Armed Citizen Project a few months ago in Houston.

Coplen tells Nine On Your Side, 500 people from neighborhoods all over Tucson have already applied for the program -- 100 of those applicants are single women.

From the bunch, organizers will select ten women to train and arm with shotguns. Coplen estimates the first group will have their guns in three weeks.

Tucson is not the project's last stop.

Coplen says they're already at work in New York, Chicago, Dallas and Indianapolis, with the hope of being in 15 cities by the end of this year.
