PINAL COUNTY (KGUN9-TV) - A young girl is dead after she was accidentally shot by another child.
Pinal County sheriff's deputies responded to a home in the 20,000 block of west Cedro Place in Casa Grande just after 8:00 p.m. Thursday in response to a shooting incident, according to Tamra Ingersoll with the Pinal County Sheriff's Department.
Once on scene, deputies discovered that 11-year-old Joan Plumb, who lived in the home, had been shot by another child in the home, Ingersoll said.
Emergency medical personnel transported Plumb to a local hospital where she was stabilized and then air-lifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Plumb was pronounced dead at around 10:55 p.m., according to Ingersoll.
During the initial investigation, deputies learned that Plumb and her friend were in the family room of the house scrap-booking when Plumb's 15-year-old brother began showing his friend his new .22 caliber rifle, according to Ingersoll.
Plumb's brother removed the clip from the gun, set the gun on the table and left the room. The 11-year-old friend picked up the rifle and it accidentally fired, striking Plumb in the head, Ingersoll said.
Plumb's father was in the back bedroom when the rifle went off. He quickly began rendering aid to his daughter while instructing the other children to call 9-1-1.
Plumb's older sibling was out of the house with Plumb's mother at the time of the shooting, Ingersoll said.
All three of the children that lived in the home are reported to be trained in firearm safety and handling, according to Ingersoll.
