Bishop weighs in on new pope

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Nine on Your Side spoke with Bishop Gerald Kicanas on the phone today, and he said he wasn't expecting Cardinal Bergoglio to be chosen, but he couldn't be happier. 


The bishop said he has never met Pope Francis personally, but said the new Pope is known to be a simple man who has a deep sensitivity to the poor. 
He will now also be know as the first Jesuit pope.
"Jesuits have had a profound influence on the spreading of the faith even here in our own community," Bishop Kicanas said.
Father Kino was also a Jesuit. 
The bishop also said that as the churches new leader in this tough time, Pope Francis will need unify Catholics from all over the world.
He said it is also important for him to bring back Catholics who left the church, as well as bring in a younger generation. 
The bishop will be back in town on Friday and will hold a noon mass at St. Augustine's to pray for the pope.
