FLORENCE, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Deputy Ivan Villafana with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office was presented with a Lifesaving Medal by Sheriff Paul Babeu Tuesday.
Villafana within minutes of the original 9-1-1 call coming that came into the PCSO communications center regarding a female who was losing a lot of blood. He assessed the situation in which the female was bleeding profusely. She was also slipping in and out of consciousness because of the amount of blood she had already lost.
In a news release, PCSO spokesperson Tim Gaffney said that Deputy Villafana removed the towel and applied direct pressure with his hand to the wound which immediately stopped the bleeding.
A short time later, EMS personnel arrived on scene and quickly applied a tourniquet to her arm. The female was still drifting in and out of consciousness.
She was rushed to a local hospital where she was provided with a blood transfusion to save her life.
