TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Denise Torres stood before a judge Wednesday afternoon and pleaded not guilty. She didn't say much, her attorney did most of the talking in the courtroom. But outside, things were different. She told 9OYS she had a message for Ruby Martinez's family.

Torres said, "I'm sorry. I'm a mother of three children. I'm so sorry for their loss."

9OYS reporter Marcelino Benito took that message back to Ruby's family.

"The truth is she didn't look remorseful at all," said Arturo Martinez, Ruby's father. "She doesn't look like someone who feels bad about what she did."

The family says they want justice for what happened down this dark road on January 11th. Torres stands accused of running Ruby over, but then leaving the scene, a class 3 felony. Deputies say Torres returned about 30 minutes later. But by then, Ruby was dead.

"Had she just waited," says Arturo. "Things could have been so different. Maybe Ruby wouldn't have suffered as much. Just maybe she'd be alive."

The loss has ripped a hole in this family's heart. Ruby's mother too upset by Wednesday's hearing to talk on camera, but she tells us she doesn't buy Torres apology. What they want, she says, they can never get back.

"Losing her so suddenly was rough," said Arturo, choking back tears. "She was so young. She had so many dreams. And now all of that is over."

Torres is due back in court on March 15th. Torres has been out of custody since the accident. A judge has ordered her to stay away from Ruby's family as part of conditions for her release.
