TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Police recovered gems stolen from a motel during last year's gem show that are worth half a million dollars.

Sgt. Chris Widmer with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that police tracked down the thieves who had stolen the gems on February 7, 2012.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for a home in the 5000 block of East Whispering Sage on January 17.

The gems, worth more than $500,000, were recovered and returned to the owner David Wheatley, the following day.

Nine On Your Side spoke with Wheatley who praised the work of the officers and detectives. He said having these gems stolen from him and his wife greatly affected his business.

"It very well devastated us," he said.

Detectives also obtained a search warrant for a second home located at 31 N. Los Reales Rd., where they found 30 to 40 more gem stones they believe are related to the original theft.

They also found several weapons and ammunition, along with cocaine and marijuana.

No arrests have been made at this time, however the investigation is ongoing.
