TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Firefighters with the Tucson Fire Department started their new year battling two fires within the first few hours of 2013.

Capt. Barrett Baker with TFD tells KGUN9 that at 12:14 a.m., firefighters were called to a house fire in the 2100 block of East Pinal Vista.

The first units saw that 50 percent of the house was on fire with heavy smoke.

Crews found the fire was in the attic but they had it controlled in 18 minutes.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries to firefighters on scene.

The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation but damages are estimated at $50,000.

Three hours later, firefighters were again called to a fire, this time at a building downtown in the 100 block of East Congress.

The building, which has the store Wig-o-rama, had heavy smoke coming from the roof.

The ladder crew was going to cut a hole in the roof to allow smoke to escape but the captain on scene determined that the roof was not safe.

The fire was in the attic space and because the building was old and had current renovations, crews were told to only fight the fire from the outside.

It took more than 15 units and 40 firefighters to contain the fire and get it under control. There were no injuries to firefighters and no one was inside the building at the time.

The cause, origin and damages have not been made.
