YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - Suspected smugglers who tried to use ramps to drive an SUV over a 14-foot tall border fence near the Colorado River had to abandon the effort when the Jeep became stuck on top of the fence.
U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Spencer Tippets says agents patrolling agents spotted the Jeep Cherokee atop the fence early Tuesday morning about 5 miles west of the Arizona-California border.
Two smugglers on the Mexican side of the border were trying to free the Jeep when the agents approached and ran further into Mexico.
The Jeep was empty but agents believe it was likely filled with contraband like bales of marijuana before it got stuck.
The smugglers had built ramps to drive up and over the fence.
