GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A Glendale police officer is on standard, paid administrative leave after he fatally shot a man over the weekend.
Authorities say Officer Justin Penrose shot 38-year-old Kenneth Girardot after he began driving his vehicle straight toward Penrose on Saturday.
Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coombs says Penrose had yelled for Girardot to stop before firing his gun.
Officers who had been called for backup came to Girardot's aid, but he died on the scene.
Penrose had discovered that the vehicle Girardot was driving had been stolen a month ago from Mesa. He then requested backup before Girardot drove toward him.
Penrose has 14 years of experience as a police officer.
