Do we need to rethink our security measures in public places?

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The mass shooting in Colorado has many people worried about safety in public places. Can you really be totally safe? Venue Security Expert, Steve Adelman, says that it's time to re-think what we're willing to do to be safer.

"An incident like this one gives Americans the opportunity to ask, 'Have we perhaps reached the point where we need to have more security in places where we currently prefer to have virtually none?" said Adelman. Now that another violent U.S. tragedy has happened, Adelman believes that we need to look around the world and compare our public security to that of other nations.

"If you go to Israel, let's say, where they understand there is a very real threat the presence of armed security guards or armed military officers outside of shopping malls is not only expected, it is welcomed because those heavily armed young people are protecting you. They're protecting you from harm. Americans are a very long way from having that attitude and we grudgingly accept security, even in places which are obvious targets like giant football or baseball stadiums." Adelman adds that in the year and a half since the January 8th shootings in Tucson, he has seen virtually no changes in security at shopping centers.
