Judge rejects bid to join Ariz. redistricting case

CREATED Jun 9, 2012 - UPDATED: Jun 9, 2012

PHOENIX (AP) Federal judges who will consider a challenge by Republicans to Arizona's map of new legislative districts are refusing to let the state public campaign funding commission participate in the court case.

An order by District Judge Roslyn Silver says the Citizens Campaign Elections Commission's only stake in the case is that the fate of the current districts be decided in time to avoid disrupting the public campaign funding system.

Silver's order says that's only a speculative interest now that the Republicans who filed the challenge say they won't seek an order to bar use of the new map during this year's elections.

The plaintiffs' change in position prompted Maricopa County officials to withdraw their request to intervene in the case.

Silver issued the order on behalf of a three-judge panel.
