TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Two women died in separate hiking trips this week after being overcome by the heat. Now rescuers are stepping forward with a warning: don't think it won't happen to you.
"People underestimate the desert. It's unforgiving and you have to make sure you're well prepared" said Deputy Michael Johnson of Pima County Search and Rescue. Before you're overcome with the beauty of the desert, remember this:
- hike before 10am or after 4 pm.
- wear sunscreen, light colored clothes and a wide brim hat.
- hike in groups
- bring a cell phone
- don't forget the right amount water. Experts suggest drinking one quart of water per hour.
