TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A smoldering mattress caused an apartment fire on Tuesday morning.

Battalion Chief Pat Quinn tells KGUN9 that neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from an apartment window in the 400 block of West Kelso.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they confirmed smoke in apartment.  After they forced entry into an apartment, they found a mattress smoldering in the bedroom.

Crews removed the smoldering mattress from the apartment and then it was extinguished.

Fire investigation determined the cause of the smoldering mattress was abandoned smoking
materials.  Total damage estimated at $3,000.

Nobody was in the apartment at the time of the fire, but three dogs were in the apartment and were not injured.

Two adults and three dogs have been displaced.
