PHOENIX (AP) - A federal agency has issued subpoenas to the Pinal County sheriff and the county board after Sheriff Paul Babeu's office refused to turn over two laptops for inspection.
Documents obtained show the subpoenas were issued last week by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. The agency is looking into allegations that Babeu and several key aides were working on his congressional campaign with county resources on while on duty.
Babeu is running for the Republican nomination in the 4th Congressional District against state Sen. Ron Gould and Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.
Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney has told the Republic that the office is cooperating with the OSC inquiry. Gaffney is one of the investigation's targets.
