TUCSON (KGUN9- TV) - Arizona is getting more unwanted publicity after a Daily Show segment featuring Tucson Unified School District board member Michael Hicks hit the airwaves Monday night.  Wednesday, Hicks spoke publicly about it for the first time on 104.1 The Truth, a radio station owned by 9 On Your Side's parent company Journal Broadcast Group.

During the radio segment, host Jon Justice began with a cordial greeting asking Hicks how he was doing.  Hicks responded, "I've been better."

The words seem to sum up the past couple of days for Hicks, after the Daily Show segment put him and Arizona in the spotlight, and the light wasn't flattering.

The spoof news segment features Hicks trying to explain the district's decision to ban Mexican-American studies.  What results are a series of verbal blunders.  In one case Hicks is depicted referring to "Rosa Clark" instead of Rosa Parks.

Hicks told Jon Justice he interviewed for three and a half hours, and didn't know what The Daily Show was or that they'd take his words out of context for a short segment.

"I was naive, I should've checked to see what that was," said Hicks.

He also explained the Clark situation.

"The interviewer said Rosa Clark and I responded back, 'Rosa Clark?'" he said, "and they took that and they put that."

Hicks declined an on-camera interview with 9 On Your Side, but he did confirm The Daily Show crew didn't hide who they were.  He also confirmed he remembered signing something before the shoot.  It all took place two months ago.

Now, Hicks says he is receiving emails and phone calls from people all over the country, angry over the way he was depicted in the segment.

"What bothers me the most is that we have individuals out there who watch this thing and actually think that it was real and actually think that what they showed or what they portrayed actually came out of my mouth," said Hicks on the Jon Justice Show.

Justice told 9 On Your Side he believes Hicks didn't know what he was getting into.  He also offered the board member advice.

"I told him he should have called me for one," said Justice, "When I saw just the headline of Daily Show Michael Hicks TUSD I immediately knew what this was going to be about."

Now that Hicks knows what The Daily Show is about, he says will not be accepting interviews before asking a few trusted friends first.
