Two accused robbers die in police chase
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) -Two suspects fleeing police after a robbery were killed early Tuesday morning when their Jeep Cherokee went out of control, crossed a median and slammed into an urgent care building in a supermarket parking lot.
The identities of the man and woman who were killed were not immediately released. Another couple, a man and woman also in the Jeep were injured and hospitalized.
Deputies say they responded to a call in the 3700 block of West Exton. Two women reported they had been robbed of purses and valuables at gunpoint. The victims told deputies that they were approached by four people earlier in the evening at Casino del Sol. They felt uncomfortable and went home. When the victims arrived to their neighborhood, they realized they were being followed by the four suspects in a white Jeep Cherokee.
According to the victims, they got into their home through the garage door, but one of the suspects rolled under the door while it was closing and pistol whipped one of the victims. He and the other three fled the scene with the victims' personal items.
Deputies say they located the vehicle and began a pursuit shortly after responding to the call. At one point during the police pursuit, officers said a suspect threw a handgun from the fleeing Jeep and it struck a patrol vehicle.
The escaping vehicle traveled on Valencia Road, entered I-19 and deputies say the suspects attempted to exit the freeway at Ajo Way, when it went out of control.
The accident closed Ajo Way in both directions at the freeway, although I-19 traffic itself was unaffected.
Traffic in both directions of Ajo Way was re-opened shortly before 7am.
