Dozens arrested in cockfighting raid in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County sheriff investigators arrested dozens of people as part of a cockfighting investigation after a weekend raid on a home in Phoenix.
The Arizona Republic reports that the sheriff's SWAT team sprang to action Saturday after a receiving a tip and investigators conducted surveillance and obtained a search warrant.
In all, 42 people were arrested.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio says some of the 16 birds discovered at the home were dead. Other birds were injured. Some of the animals had to be euthanized.
The sheriff says one of the 42 men who were arrested was arrested on suspicion of cockfighting and had been convicted of such activity in the past.
The majority were arrested on suspicion of being present at a cockfight. Four or five also had outstanding warrants.
