Greenwood County murder suspect Kevin Welsh is dead

UPDATE:  Double murder suspect Kevin Welsh was killed in a confrontation with Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents in Eureka late Wednesday night.   

According to a statement from the KBI, agents were called to a building at 8th and Poplar when a law enforcement officer reported that an entrance door had been tampered with.   After getting approval from the building owner, the KBI agents went inside and they encountered  Welsh, who then pointed a handgun at them.  The agents fired and Welsh went down.   He was taken to a Eureka hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m. 

Greenwood County attorney Joe Lee will appoint a special prosecutor to review the investigation. 

Welsh was wanted for an October 2nd shooting at a home near Eureka.   His former girlfriend, Catherine Scheff, was seriously injured in the shootings. Her 52-year-old mother, Sheila Kriesel, and her 54-year-old stepfather, Keith Kriesel, were both killed. 




Update 12:00 Thursday Morning: The Kansas Attorney General's office has confirmed that double murder suspect Kevin Welsh, has been killed. 

In a statement, the AG's office says Welsh and KBI agents exchanged gunfire near 8th and Poplar around 9:30 Wednesday evening. 

Welsh was rushed to a Eureka hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m. 

More information is expected to be released later today. 

Update 11:15 PM: Our news partners at KWCH are reporting that murder suspect Kevin Welsh has been killed in a shooting in Eureka late Wednesday night. 

Sources say Welsh shot first at officers, and officers returned fire. 

We are awaiting official confirmation from the State Attorney General's office. 

 KFDI News has received reports of a shooting in Eureka. This is near 9th and Poplar. 

Residents in the area reported hearing a half-dozen gunshots shortly after 9:30 this evening. Police and medical personnel are on the scene. The suspect in a triple shooting earlier this month, Kevin Welsh, is still believed to be in the Eureka area. It is not known if he was involved in the incident tonight. 

Authorities in Greenwood County are being tight-lipped about this latest development, and say that all information about the incident would come from the state Attorney General's office.
