Security measures taken at Wichita high school after social media rumors
The Wichita school district stepped up security at a high school after an off-campus fight led to rumors posted on social media websites of another possible incident that would happen.
Officials at South High School had extra police officers on campus Thursday. School officials say there was a fight that took place Wednesday two blocks away from the school, and some students posted rumors that the fight would lead to another incident at the school on Thursday.
South High officials sent a message to parents about the situation, and it said the students involved would face disciplinary action because of social media messages that led to "a significant disruption to our school day." The letter stated that the Wichita Police Department helped to investigate the sources of the social media rumors. Additional security measures were put in place and there were additional Wichita police officers at the school as a precaution, but the letter said students were safe at school and classes were going on as scheduled.
