Record rain falls in Wichita

Record rain falls in Wichita

By George Lawson. CREATED Jun 25, 2014

Thunderstorms brought heavy rain and some hail to south central Kansas Tuesday afternoon, and it turned out to be a record-setting rainfall for Mid-Continent Airport.

The airport reported 2.47 inches of rain, which was the most rainfall in one day since August 25th of 2012.  It also broke the previous record for the date of June 24th, which was 2.43 inches in 1995.

There was no severe weather in the Wichita area, but the heavy rains caused street flooding that made some streets and roadways impassable for a short time.

Severe storms with high winds caused some damage in western Kansas.  A roof was blown off an industrial building in Garden City and some power poles and tree limbs were downed.   Wind damage was reported to a farm in Gray County, where a steel ladder was twisted around a grain bin, a two-by-four was blown through a pickup windshield, and a small building was destroyed.
