Improvements planned for southwest Wichita street
Wichita officials want to begin construction as soon as possible on improvements on Meridian from Pawnee to McCormick in the southwest part of the city.
Meridian will be widened from four to five lanes, with a center left turn lane. There will be drainage improvements and a new sidewalk on both sides of the street. The project will also realign Orient at Meridian to make that intersection safer and more accessible.
The Wichita City Council approved the design concept for the project, and the city is working to buy the needed properties and relocate utility lines.
Construction should begin early next year, but city engineer Gary Janzen wants to get started as quickly as possible. He says because of poor drainage, the pavement on Meridian has deteriorated - and it's getting worse.
Federal funding is expected to cover a significant portion of the construction costs.
