Getting to know WSU basketball: Fred VanVleet

Getting to know WSU basketball: Fred VanVleet

By Kyle McCaskey. CREATED Oct 29, 2013

Fred VanVleet is a sophomore on the Wichita State men's basketball team. VanVleet was a key reserve for the Shockers as a freshman, playing in all 39 games. The Rockford, Ill. native averaged 4.3 ppg, including hitting 41 percent of his 3-point shots. He was also second on the team in assists with 89.

KFDI News' Kyle McCaskey talked with VanVleet this week.

What was it like to go to the Final Four?

It's special. I'll remember it the rest of my life. It's something that nobody can ever take away from us. But it's a new year. We have to put that in the past and focus on new goals.

When you were recruited, did you think WSU could go to the Final Four your freshman year?

Me, personally, I had the highest expectations. Sometimes you get mixed up between dreams and expectations. I think that was more of a dream, to try to win a national championship and being on that stage. It actually came true.

Does talk about teammate Cleanthony Early getting a chance at the NBA change anything?

We're still the same guys. They're such good teammates, down to earth guys, that it doesn't change at all.

What did you learn from facing Louisville in the Final Four?

I think you just learn that when you have opportunities, you have to capitalize. With the bigger and better teams that you play, there is less margin for error. You really have to be on top of your game.

Best thing about being a Shocker?

Fan support.

Best shooter?

Ron Baker.

Best dunker?

Tekele Cotton.

Best dresser?

Fred VanVleet.

Favorite Movie?

Favorite thing about Wichita?

Shocker basketball.

Can Evan Wessel (who is sitting beside VanVleet during the interview) guard you one-on-one?

No. No contest.

Better hair - Ron Baker or Evan Wessel?

It depends who you ask. You have the blonde or the brunette. It just depends how you like it ... You can't go wrong with these two right here.
