Fire tears through old Stafford High School

Fire tears through old Stafford High School

By Matthew Harding. CREATED Mar 16, 2014 - UPDATED: Mar 16, 2014

Fire crews from across Stafford County were brought in to fight a blaze at the old Stafford High School in Stafford

The blaze broke out around 8 Saturday night. Our news partners at KWCH 12 report a police officer spotted the fire on the third floor of the school and dispatched a crew to the scene. Crews from across Stafford County and Great Bend were on the scene fighting the fire for several hours.

Stafford Chief of Police Doug Brown says embers from the fire were blown for blocks, causing multiple grass fires.

"We were overwhelmed very quickly," Brown said.

Brown says a criminal investigation into the fire is now underway, which is being led by the State Fire Marshal's office.

A cause is not known at this time, but Brown says there has not been any utilities connected to the building for a while, so electricity was not a factor in the fire.

There were no injuries. Brown says the building is a total loss.
