The St. Louis Rams drafted Michael Sam, giving hope that he could become the first openly gay NFL player after he came out earlier this year.

That hope has been temporarily delayed, as Sam was one of the Rams' final roster cuts on Saturday.

As NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported:

"He kept his head down and worked and you can't ask anything more out of any player for that matter," said coach Jeff Fisher, who told Sam of the cut on Friday.

His words:

If he clears waivers - meaning no other team picks him up by Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT - the team could bring Sam back and place him on the practice squad.

Sam, who played at the University of Missouri, was one of four 7th-round draft picks the Rams cut on Saturday.

The team is stockpiled with talent at Sam's position, defensive end.
