A New Hampshire police officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute at a home in Brentwood on Monday afternoon. Not long afterward, the home went up in flames. As a news helicopter circled overhead, there was an explosion inside.

According to Boston’s WCBV NewsCenter 5, Officer Stephen Arkell, a married father of two teenagers, was shot and killed when he entered the home at in response to a call about a domestic dispute. Other officers were driven from the home by gunfire.
The shooter is believed to be resident Michael Nolan, 47, who may have lived there with his father. Nolan reportedly suffered from some kind of mental illness.
After killing the officer, Nolan is then believed to have set the duplex on fire, “and about 5:50 p.m., a massive explosion rocked the neighborhood and tore part of the roof off the building,” NewsCenter 5 reports. “The house was quickly engulfed in flames and destroyed.”
Firefighters and other emergency personnel were kept away from the home because of the gunfire. The fire was later put out before it could spread to neighboring homes.
Nolan is believed to have died in the fire.
