A mother in Florida was arrested for letting her 7-year-old son walk alone to a park, and she did not taking it lying down.
According to TODAY.com, Nicole Gainey was charged with child neglect after she let her son walk to a local park near their home in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
The mother told WPTV in West Palm Beach that she was "totally dumbfounded" by the whole situation and she was going to fight the charge.
The arrest took place last Saturday. Gainey's son Dominic walked half a mile to the park, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. On the way, he was apparently asked by someone at a public pool where his mom was.
Dominic got scared and took off running. The person who was questioning Dominic called the local police department.
The young boy was playing at the park when the police officers arrived. They took him home and arrested his mother on a felony child neglect charge.
Gainey says she believes Dominic is mature enough to go to the park alone and her son always has a cellphone on him, which she uses to check on him.
The mother was notified early Wednesday morning by the Florida Department of Children and Families that the felony charge would be dropped.
There is no law in St. Lucie County that specifies how old a child has to be before he or she can go somewhere alone. Incidents are handled on a case-by-case basis.
