Elton John and longtime partner David Furnish are getting married.
If you thought they were already married, you’re not alone. The couple entered into a British civil partnership eight years ago, throwing a big celebration at their London home at the time.
“But, given that Friday marked the first day gays were allowed to tie the knot in England, they've decided to say ‘I do’ once again,” reports E! Online
. They plan to marry in May in an English registry office. The British Parliament recently passed a new law legalizing same sex marriage.
Furnish broke the news to the Las Vegas Review Journal Friday at John's birthday party at Fizz Las Vegas in Caesars Palace Las Vegas.
"We don't feel the need to take an extra step legally," Furnish said. "But since we're committed for life, we feel it's really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example."
John made similar comments to Jimmy Kimmel last fall, saying, “If the laws are gonna help us again, as a famous gay couple we will do it. It's our duty to do it to make sure everyone knows that this is something that's a gift that we never dreamed we'd ever get," he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
The couple’s two sons, Elijah and Zachary, will attend the civil ceremony in May.
