If you spend your weekends filling up your bird feeders only to have most of the seed get stolen by squirrels, you’ll appreciate this viral video.
After noticing a rock squirrel had been raiding their bird feeder and carrying away what they describe as “pounds of seed” in its cheek pouches, one couple decided to take action using a simple household item: Vaseline. They greased the pole leading to the feeder, then pressed play on a video recorder and sat back and laughed while the determined squirrel spent three frustrating minutes trying to overcome this daunting new obstacle.
In their YouTube video, aptly titled “Slippery Squirrel,” the couple notes, “for anyone who is concerned about the squirrel, he still raids our other two feeders and the vegetable garden. The tiny amount of Vaseline used is non-toxic, the kind used for lip balm. He quickly learned that this feeder was not worth the trouble, so we have not put more on the pole, and the birds are delighted to actually get some of the bird seed.”
