There is a dangerous and baffling new trend involving the popular candy brand Smarties. Instead of eating them, kids are snorting the candy or smoking it.
There are videos all over YouTube showing kids crushing the candy and then inhaling it either through their mouths or noses.
When "smoking Smarties," the person will crush the candy into a fine powder while in its wrapper, draw it into their mouths and then blow it out in a cloud of dust like cigarette smoke. Some of the advanced smokers can even blow smoke rings.
When "snorting Smarties," the crushed powder is snorted into a person's lungs through their nostrils using straws or rolled up dollar bills just like cocaine is snorted.
The motivation behind the bizarre trend is unclear, but the harmful effects are very real.
Some of the negative side effects of snorting Smarties include infection or scarring of the nasal cavities, an allergic reaction, lung irritation and even the possibility of maggots feeding on the sugary dust wedged inside the nose.
It is assumed that those who snort or smoke the candy experience some sort of sugar high after doing so, but that has not been proven.
It's more likely the kids are doing it simply in a misguided effort to look cool.
