Standoff in St. James City

ST. JAMES CITY, Fla. - A standoff in St. James City ended peacefully Tuesday morning.  Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested 51-year-old Duane Matthew Wyatt on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and false imprisonment.

The initial call came in around 1:16 a.m.  A 50-year-old man told detectives that he met with Wyatt at Froggie's Bar in St. James City for a few drinks.  Then Wyatt invited him back to his home in the 2200 block of York Road to smoke some marijuana.

The victim says eventually Wyatt made an unwanted sexual advance on the victim and he tried to leave.  However, Wyatt had taken his keys and refused to give them back.  Detectives report that Wyatt then pointed a handgun in the face of the victim and insisted he stay and "party".  Eventually, Wyatt placed the gun on a counter and the man was able to grab it and flee the home as Wyatt threatened to kill him.

Around 7:30 a.m. the incident escalated and members of the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Squad and Hostage Negotiation Team responded in efforts to bring a safe resolution to the circumstances.  Wyatt was known to have other weapons inside his home.  He walked out of his residence and surrendered to deputies at 9:19 a.m., without further incident.

Wyatt is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and battery.
