PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A 23-year-old Port Charlotte woman has been charged with abusing her two children and branding them.
Kayla Oxenham was charged with felony child abuse on Tuesday.
The investigation into Oxenham started in late March after reports of child abuse were received by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
A 7-year-old told investigators that Oxenham got mad at her 5-year-old sister for locking a cat in the bathroom. She said that Oxenham slammed the girl's head into a wall several times before kicking her in the side.
Then, the 7-year-old said their mother on another occasion, lit a stick on fire and burned both sisters on the arm for two reasons. She told investigators Oxenham wanted to be able to identify the children as hers and the other reason being so they could have ice cream.
Oxenham denied after attacking the 5-year-old and refused to answer questions about the burn marks when asked by investigators.
