Lee County deputies shoot man suspected in car theft

By Sara Belsole. CREATED Mar 2, 2014

FORT MYERS -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy involved shooting early Sunday in Fort Myers.

It happened just after 3 a.m. at the Pilot Travel Plaza on Plaza Drive just off I-75.

"All of the sudden I heard pow pow pow, gun shots," truck driver Margaret Lecomte said.

Lecomte was sleeping inside her 18-wheeler when she heard the shots. When she looked outside she saw a car rammed underneath her truck.

"I have a bullet hole back there at the back of my trailer and the car had run up underneath and the back window is knocked out," Lecomte said.

Deputies were checking out a possible stolen vehicle at one of the pumps.  As deputies tried to initiate contact, the driver rammed two squad cars and attempted to run over deputies in an attempt to get away.

Deputies opened fire on the man, who was struck once. But he continued to drive away at a high rate of speed.  A short distance later, he crashed into a parked truck and ran from the vehicle.

"It was scary, it was really scaring and shocking and sudden, I didn't know if I was being robbed or what was going on," truck driver Josh Lawson said.

Lawson was also sleeping inside his truck. A stray bullet hit his truck.

"I heard yelling and chaos, I heard them chase this guy into the field," Lawson said.

Deputies captured the driver and he was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The female passenger in the vehicle was not injured and is being questioned.  No deputies were injured.

No names have been released yet. The investigation continues.
