Flu like virus spreading through dogs in Southwest Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A Nationwide pet epidemic is forcing a Fort Myers dog resort to temporarily close up and clean up. The business ''The Dog Resort'  sent letters to clients notifying of the flu-like virus passing through pups at their facility.

Christina Bryan spends most days with our four legged friends at her business 'I let your dogs out.' She said a sickly situation with her own pup inspired her to enter the animal field.

"Years ago I had my dog in  boarding and I came back and he had diarrhea and he had some of these symptoms like this whole virus." Bryan said.

It was those symptoms that workers at 'The Dog Resort' on Metro Parkway said have been showing on their pets too. A letter was sent to clients notifying of the virus and that the business would be closed from November 7th-20th while the facility is deep cleaned and sanitized. Owners didn't want to comment on camera but Collier County Domestic Animal Services Sr. Shelter Technician Tammy Wolny said it is pretty common.

" Dogs are in close contact there's people in close contact if you're touching one dog, then going to another dog and touching that dog in between." Wolny said.
Wolny said you can't pin point the exact type of virus until you see a vet, but the symptoms are comparable to the common cold.
"Coughing, vomiting, sneezing, a little lethargic anything like that." Wolny said.
If your dog has been around other pets, Wolny encourages owners to be pro-active so this virus doesn't keep spreading.
"They might need a dose of antibiotics or some kind of medication. I would keep them out of the day-care area until they're feeling better." Wolny said.
