Concrete chunk seen missing from Matlacha Bridge

MATLACHA, Fla. - Questions surfaced today after people noticed a section of concrete missing from the north side of Matlacha Bridge, just a few months after the newly built bridge opened to traffic.   Contract workers drilled around the section, which was about a foot wide.  County officials said the work is part of the final "punch list" of items to do before the county will accept the project as final.

"It just had to do with how they constructed it and it led to some cracking and as they got into it they realized there's an error there and they chipped all the old concrete out and they're going to have to redo it," said David Loveland, Director of Lee County Department of Transportation.
Loveland assured the work is "normal" for any project.
"We're just basically saying they need to finish all the work that needs to be done including these repairs before we can call the project finalized," he said.
Local business owners said they feel as though that day will never come.
"It doesn't seem like it's ever going to end... if you want job security, just be a bridge builder," said Jim Frock, owner of Seven Seas Bait and Tackle.
The project was supposed to be completed within two years, but three years later, it's still not done. Loveland said with the whole project so far behind schedule already, these repairs won't have much of an impact on when it's completed.
