Collier boating victims identified

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission released the identity of a man and a woman who died after a boating accident Monday afternoon in Golden Gate Estates.

FWC identified the man as 48-year-old Romero Gomez of Immokalee.  The woman was 36-year-old Margarita Godinez of Immokalee.  The two survivors were identified as 46-year-old Gilberto Sales and 27-year-old Mardoqueo Sales, both of Immokalee.

The jon boat the four were riding on in a canal off of 34th Ave. Southeast and Everglades Boulevard capsized.

 FWC spokesman Jorge Pino said the four were returning from a day of illegally picking saw palmetto berries

"One of the individuals managed to hold on to the vessel from what I'm being told for hours one of the gentleman was able to make it to shore and he ran to go get help."

Pino said a female passenger died right away while the others held on to the over turned boat struggling to survive.
"The other gentleman at some point mentioned he was going to give up and let go of the vessel the other held on for his life." Pino said.
