Bertha becomes a hurricane
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The National Hurricane Center upgraded Bertha to hurricane status.
Bertha is located about 515 miles east of Fort Myers or 400 miles east of Miami along the east side of the Bahamas.
Bertha is maintaining winds of 80 mph while moving to the north at 17 mph.
The Bermuda High in the Atlantic is steering Bertha around its perimeter carrying along the east side of the Bahamas followed by a turn to the northeast carrying it out to the open waters of the Atlantic.
The wind shear is forecast to strengthen on Tuesday forcing Bertha to begin weakening as it continues to the northeast.
