Four vehicle crash injures 2 in Charlotte County

By FOX 4 Staff. CREATED Dec 2, 2013 - UPDATED: Dec 2, 2013

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A crash involving a dump truck and a deputy's patrol car running with lights and siren sent two people to the hospital.

The Florida Highway Patrol says 23-year-old Valentin Rupo of Cape Coral was driving a dump truck south on U.S. 41 approaching the intersection of W. Tarpon Boulevard.

Two vehicles had stopped at the intersection to allow a deputy through the intersection as he was running to a call with his lights and siren activated.

The FHP says Rupo failed to stop hitting the rear of the two vehicles stopped at the intersection, pushing one of the vehicles into the deputy's car.  The crash also spilled about 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway.

The cleanup closed southbound U.S. 41 for more than three hours.

32-year-old John Frient of Port Charlotte and  49-year-old Sandra Harris of North Port, both suffered minor injuries.  Neither Rupo or the deputy were injured.

The FHP cited Rupo for careless driving.
