Colleagues, friends remember co-worker shot dead after work

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Fox 4 is learning more about the shooting at an apartment complex in Fort Myers last night. Police confirm that the victim, 58-year-old Keith Stengel, has died from his injuries. His colleagues at a realty office in downtown Fort Myers share their thoughts.

At Market America Realty in downtown Fort Myers, more than 30 realtors are without their friend.

"We lost a friend, good colleague," said Jennifer Tolar, the office manager. "And Keith would have done anything for anybody."

Keith Stengel's colleagues say he started working there two years ago. Tolar told us about Stengel's passion for life and helping others.

"He was a great listener, a great friend," remembered Tolar. "He was a great team player. He contributed to our organization and every day he was happy to be alive."

Stengel had left work yesterday around 5:30 p.m., his colleagues say. An hour-and-a-half later at Sienna at Vista Lake Apartments in Fort Myers, officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. Text messages revealed Stengel was meeting 18-year-old Brittany Stubbs, who allegedly planned to rob him. She is now charged with his murder.

"It's going to be a shock for many of us for a long time," said Barbara Truax, a close friend and colleague.

Friends say Stengel owned several businesses before joining the company, including a nightclub. But it's the time spent with him out of work that Truax will miss most.

"Missing our conversations, our times at Art Walk, our open house," said Truax.

So, as the office waits for answers, "Just trying to weed out the facts, piece it all together," said Tolar.

They're hoping for facts that might shed some light on why a spirited friend would be shot dead after work.

Police say Stengel died from his injuries overnight at Lee Memorial Hospital.

They're still looking for two male suspects in the case. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800 780 TIPS.
