After Sandy Hook, Charlotte County remodels 4 schools

By Matt Grant. CREATED Feb 5, 2013

CHARLOTTE COUNTY - Renovations have begun at four Charlotte County schools to make them safer as a result of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.

Charlotte County school buildings are designed to have one way in and multiple ways out with visitors entering through a main foyer, according to school officials.

Older schools weren't designed that way. So the district started construction to reformat the school in an effort to make kids safer.

"It's already started. We take this very seriously," said district spokesman Mike Riley, talking about the construction. "We want our schools to be a safe place to be despite what happens other places."

The district is also conducting lock-down drills with students and faculty.

No word on how much the remodeling will cost for the four schools.
