Amazon hopes to use drones to deliver packages in the future
It sounds like something you would see in a sci-fi movie. Drones flying through residential neighborhoods and cities, dropping packages from the sky.
If Amazon has its way, it will be a reality in just a few short years.
Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos revealed that the online giant is developing a drone-based delivery service during Sunday's episode of "60 Minutes."
Bezos says that he hopes the delivery service will be available to customers within 4 to 5 years.
Amazon has 96 massive warehouses scattered throughout the world. The drones would be able to deliver items up to 5 pounds in weight with a goal of delivering a package within 30 minutes.
Some say that last night's announcement was a publicity stunt. According to Business Insider, the real reason Amazon made the announcement was $3 million in free advertising on Cyber Monday.
And it certainly seems to have worked.
