The Michigan State men’s basketball team lost to rival, University of Michigan Sunday, Feb. 23 in front of a sellout crowd at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. The 9-point victory over the Spartans secured the number one spot for the Wolverines in the Big Ten standings.

Sophomore guard, Gary Harris led the Spartans with 21 points, while senior forward, Adreian Payne put up 12 points and 11 rebounds. State’s strong start gave them an 11-point lead over Michigan during the beginning of the game.

Michigan's slow start quickly came to an end as they cut their 11-point deficit to a mere two points by the start of the second half. The momentum of the Spartans decreased as the Wolverines pulled ahead during the last half of the game. Nik Stauskas, sophomore guard for University of Michigan led all scorers with 25 points, including 21 after halftime.

Michigan gained a regular-season sweep over MSU and even though the Spartans are a bit battered, they are trying to remain strong and prepare for their next game.

Michigan State (22-6) will take on Illinois (15-2) this Saturday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m. at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.
