Detroit Lions To Host New England Patriots in Third Round of Preseason Games
The Detroit Lions (1-1) will host the New England Patriots (2-0) on Thursday, August 22 at 7:30PM in their third preseason game. Arguably the most important game of the exhibition season, starters for both teams will see avid play time before an irrelevant fourth exhibition contest.
How bad have the Detroit Lions starters been? Currently, they are averaging three-and-out. They have six first downs on seven drives, and have run only 39 plays for 151 yards. Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is 14-of-24 passing for 132 yards, and no touchdowns in the past two preseason games. He has yet to fully connect with his receivers.
But, the Detroit Lions fans are not hitting the panic button. In order for the Lions to be sharp this Thursday, the offense will be anticipating the need for urgency. They know they must gain momentum in the first half, if they are going to execute success in the second half of the game. However, the Lions saving grace comes in the form of their defensive line. Having one of the most dominant D-lines in the NFL, the Lions will put the Patriot offense to the test. The New England Patriots will need to strike fast and fierce, or face defeat.
According to ESPN, the last time these two teams met in the preseason was in Week 3 in 2011; it was not a good night for the New England Patriots. The Detroit Lions came out on top as the Patriot starters picked up several penalties on offense, which cost them the game.
