Impression 5 Science Center To Unveil Colorful New Exhibit

By FOX 47 News . CREATED May 5, 2014

A life-size Lite-Brite. "Painting" with lasers. And, of course, the beloved Shadow Wall.

All of these and more will soon be open to families at Impression 5 Science Center in its new Spectrum exhibit. Spectrum, an update and expansion to the much loved Light and Color Room, is designed to teach science center patrons about the intriguing capabilities of light.

The exhibit, which is set for a grand opening on Wednesday, May 7th, incorporates the science center's popular Shadow Wall, an interactive light experience. The roughly 1,200 square-foot space will feature about 12 activities for science center patrons, all focused on the properties of light.

The piece de resistance of the exhibit is a giant light mosaic, similar to a large Lite-Brite toy. The mosaic features light pegs that turn different colors based on a sensor.

Adding diverse exhibits will benefit both members of and visitors to the science center, said Executive Director Erik Larson.

"Kids need to be able to truly experience science to really connect with it," he said. "This new exhibit marks a huge investment by the science center in a new way of engaging kids and their families. It will allow them to play, create and challenge, which is our mantra around here."

The exhibit's opening is due in large part to generous community sponsors, including:

  • Auto-Owners Insurance
  • Jackson National Life Insurance
  • The Schreiber Family
  • Lake Trust Credit Union
  • AT&T
  • K12, Inc.
  • Michigan Association of Broadcasters

"Spectrum is a big part of the ongoing evolution of Impression 5," said Larson. "This is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come for us in the next few years."

The official Grand Opening for Spectrum will occur at Impression 5's Member Night on May 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. and is open only to science center members, sponsors and media.

Impression 5 Science Center is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m. For admission prices and more information visit
