With Photos: Arson Suspected, Man Arrested Following Multi-Family House Fire

JACKSON - A fire that destroyed a multi-family home in Jackson Tuesday is suspicious, and a man is in custody. Jackson Fire Dept. and Police responded to a fire at the two-story home in the 700 block of Steward Avenue at around 11 o'clock in the morning. Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles. The fire lasted for more than three hours. Once firefighters had it out, they brought in a backhoe to knock the unstable structure down.

While the the firefighters were battling the blaze, Jackson police say a witness approached a police officer, and said she knew an individual who had poured or dumped something at the rear of residence. She said a short time later she noticed the area on fire.

Jackson Police provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, seen leaving the area.

Jackson County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Scott Watson spotted the car matching the description. Sergeant Watson stopped the car in Summit Township, and found the driver had a felony warrant out for his arrest, and that he was illegally in possession of a handgun.
The man was jailed on charges of carrying a concealed weapon along with a felony warrant for criminal sexual conduct.

Jackson City police continue to investigate the fire and the suspect's possible involvement.

JACKSON - Smoke could be seen for miles from a structure fire in Jackson Tuesday. A large house in the 700 block of Steward Avenue near Lansing Ave and Ganson Street was destroyed in the blaze.

Crews worked to contain the fire to that one structure for several house Tuesday.

The building itself is being knocked to the ground.

This was a multi-family home, and the Red Cross was activated to assist those who have been displaced.

No word yet from the fire department on what caused the fire.

Roads around the home remain closed while the demolition is being completed.
